Fathers' Rights

Protecting the Rights of Fathers in Divorce and Paternity

At Laird Valdez, we advocate forcefully for the rights of fathers on custody and visitation issues in both divorce and paternity cases. To learn how you can benefit from our experience and commitment to your interests, contact our office in Houston.

In divorce cases, there's no need to assume that one parent of the child is favored, or that children will automatically be placed with the mother. Texas law is strictly gender-neutral on child custody issues, so if you're interested in getting primary custody, we can work with you to develop and present your strongest case. That a woman lawyer is representing you won't hurt your case at all.

We also advise fathers about their rights in child support modification and enforcement actions, and the special problems that unmarried fathers sometimes face in securing visitation rights once paternity has been established.

Unmarried fathers whose paternity has not yet been established should be aware that Texas limits your ability to assert a parent-child relationship. Up to the child's fourth birthday, you have the right to claim a child as your own through the state paternity registry. Our attorneys can explain this process and how it can strengthen your parental rights.

We also represent divorcing or unmarried fathers in mediation of child support and custody issues. Two of our attorneys are certified family law mediators, and our experience with alternative dispute resolution on parenting issues can help you get the most out of this procedure.
